The Evolution of Summer Learning
When summer rolls around, about one-quarter of the 7,500 students enrolled in the Blount County School District keep coming back. In 2025, the district served nearly 1,900 children in various summer learning camps. (AASA School Administrator magazine, August 2026 edition)

Harvard University / Center for Education Policy Research
Harvard officially announced the first cohort of partner states, including Alabama. These states are policy leaders on topics such as summer learning, cell phones, elementary and middle school literacy, career preparation, and math curriculum.
Starting this fall, participating states will help examine the implementation of the policies Harvard is evaluating, build data dashboards, and much more. By learning from and collaborating with partner states, SLS empowers policymakers, practitioners, and communities to create lasting change and help every student succeed. Alabama will be focusing on analyzing the successes of their summer reading and math camps.
