The ALSDE Office of Extended Learning formally began in June 2024. OXL provides support and oversight for extended learning opportunities in the state of Alabama. This includes, but is not limited to: summer programming, before/after school programming, growing community partnerships and engaging stakeholders, overseeing the Alabama Summer and Afterschool Program grant process and summer reading/math camp allocations, and collaborating with other sections of the Alabama State Department of Education to extend the learning opportunities of students during the school day. These sections include the Alabama Reading Initiative, the Office of Mathematics Improvement, the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative, Federal Programs (21st Century Learning), the Office of School Improvement, Instructional Services, Career/Technical Education, English Learners, Special Education, and Educational Technology.
